Thomas Townsend, M.D.

Thomas Townsend, the pioneer physician of Wooster, was of Quaker parentage, and a native of Pennsylvania. He removed to Wooster in 1810-11, remained there about thirty years, when he went to Wheeling, West Virginia, where he died. He owned the property now in possession, and built what is now the frame portion, of Mr. Sprague's residence, in which he lived and had his office. Dr. Townsend was a man of marked ability in his profession, and performed a conspicuous part in the civil organ- ization of the town and county. He held different positions of official responsibility, prominent among which was an Associate Judgeship in 1819.
