S. S. Bloom
The Hon. S. S. Bloom was born in Waterford, Penn, March 1834. He was the only child of George and Mary Ann Bloom. His mother died when he was but six days old and he was reared by his grandfather John Stambaugh, sr. In 1856 he was chosen to teach the district school in which he had received his education. He continued to teach school until 1858. He was married in 1855 to Miss Mary Ann Stambaugh a lady of his mother's name but not connected with the family. He moved to Shelby in 1856. He served as deputy postmaster for five years. He served as township clerk, justice of the peace and mayor respectively, for a number of years. He was twice elected representative to the legislature from Richland county, serving in that capacity for eight years. He was admitted to practice in 1864 and has practiced his profession since that time. Mr. Bloom introduced the first bill in the legislature providing for the payment of the public debt of the state of Ohio by installments. This measure became a law and since its adoption the debt has been almost extinguished. In 1881 he was named as a suitable candidate for the office of Governor of Ohio but declined the honor saying he was "too poor to run." In 1896 he was again mentioned as a candidate for congress but again refused to be a candidate. He has been connected wiht the public cchools in Shelby for years and has always been a faithful worker for the advancement of the cause. Mr. Bloom was also the first person to establish a printing office in Shelby. The first paper published was the Pioneer which made its appearance in 1858. He is the author of a number of books of note which have met with approval all over the United States. he has also been connected with the churches of Shelby being a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church. Although well up in years he still follows his profession.
