Gabriel Markle
PIONEERS OF SOMERFORD TOWNSHIP, MADISON COUNTY
About 1808-10, Gabriel Markle, a native of Maryland, emigrated to Ohio and settled in this township, on the place now owned by George Prugh, one mile north of the village of Somerford, on Deer Creek. Here he remained through life, and died about 1825, nearly eighty years of age. He was of German descent, a good industrious man and a worthy citizen. He had four sons and nine daughters, who grew up and became worthy citizens, but are now all deceased.

At this place, about 1814, Gabriel Markle erected a saw-mill run by water, and, a year or two later, he erected a grist-mill. This mill he continued to run about ten years, when he was succeeded by John ROBERTS, who conducted business there several years, since which it was in the ownership of several different persons.
