George R. Porter


George R. Porter is a Virginian by birth, born in Botatot county, in the year 1812. He settled in Lawrence county in 1834. He is engaged in farming in Elizabeth township. In Vernon township, Scioto county, in 1834, he was married to Rebecca Skelton, who was born in Lawrence county in the year 1815. They have two boys viz: Samuel S., born February 23, 1836, and William F., November 17, 1837. The parents of Mr. Porter are John and Sarah (Summers) Porter. Mrs. Porter’s parents are Samuel and Frances (Willson) Skelton. Both of the sons of Mr. Porter were soldiers in the war of the rebellion. Samuel S. enlisted in the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861, serving until the year 1865; William F. enlisted in 1862, in the 56th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company G, and was killed at Champion Hills, near Vicksburg. Mr. Porter has held the office of trustee of Elizabeth township, being elected in 1838, and continuing in office for four years. In 1861 he was elected justice of the peace, which office he held for three years. Mr. Porter’s postoffice address is Powellsville, Scioto county, Ohio.
