Nelson Cox
Nelson Cox was born in Cabell county, Virginia, May 21, 1828. He emigrated to Lawrence county in 1854. He was married to Catherine Gardner in Rome township, July 2, 1852. She was born in this county September 1, 1830. Mr. Cox, from his youth, gave the subject of fruit-growing his especial attention, and has made it an entire success. He now has eighty acres planted in every variety of fruit. In apples his chief varieties are: Rome Beauty, Northern Spy, Smith's Cider, Ben Davis, and Rall's Jennett.
Mr. Cox considers the above named qualities of fruit the leading in a pecuniary way. He has at different times exhibited as high as seventy-five varieties of apples. He has taken premiums on the above named varieties. He is always represented extensively in fruits at the Lawrence county fair, and is greatly encouraged by the premiums he receives. He also raises peaches, quinces, cherries, grapes, and the different varieties of berries. Mr. Cox is also turning his attention to the raising of thoroughbred stock. Mr. Cox's father, William was born in 1790, in Buckingham county, Virginia.
He married Sarah White in Mason county, Virginia, in 1811, and removed to Cabell county, where he engaged in farming. He died in that county in 1866. His wife was born in Caroline county, Virginia, in 1795. She died in 1879. Mrs. Nelson Cox's father, Thomas Gardner, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and emigrated to Lawrence county, Ohio, in 1817. He was married in Pennsylvania to Cloa Gillett. He died in 1879. His wife died in 1869. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Cox are as follows: Eugenia R., (Kerr), born May, 1854, resides in Union township; Albert G., June 6, 1856, died April 7, 1857; Adella U., March 8, 1859; Maud A., July 15, 1861; Elton G., July 17, 1863; Uria T., October 13, 1866; Mabel, September 5, 1869; Ethel, September 15, 1873. Mr. Cox should be addressed at Bradrick, Lawrence county, Ohio.
