George A. Matthews
George A. Matthews, who is engaged in general farming on a tract of 207 acres located in Section 23, Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, was born February 9, 1858. on his father's farm in Wells Township, and is a son of Alexander and Mary A. (Wilson) Matthews.
Alexander C. Matthews was born and reared on his father's farm in Ohio County, West Virginia. When a young man he purchased and operated the home farm for three years, then sold it and in 1846 came to Jefferson County, Ohio, and located in Wells Township on the present W. Matthews farm, which he purchased from David Barrett. He died on this farm June 20, 1898, at the age of eighty-one years. He was united in marriage with Mary A. Wilson, who was a daughter of Dr. Job Wilson, of Ohio County, West Virginia, and of their union were born: Sarah E., deceased, who was the wife of Basil Britt; Rachael, who is the widow of Elmer Everson; Isabella, who is the wife of James Beard; Louisana, who married Daniel Taylor; Caroline, who is the wife of Robert Carpenter; Viola, who married David Jordan; Enoch, who is deceased; George A.; Joseph and Rebecca, both of whom died in youth; Margaret, who died aged twenty-two years; Clara, who died aged one year, and William.
George A. Matthews was reared on the home farm in Wells Township and was there married and began housekeeping. He subsequently rented the William Noble farm of 50 acres in Wells Township for three years, after which he operated the old Worthington farm of 169 acres in this township for six years. He then purchased 115 acres of his present farm from Daniel Loekins, later adding to this at various times, thirty-eight acres, which he purchased from W. L. Gusick, twenty-three acres of the David Armstrong farm, and thirty-two acres of the James Thompson farm, all of which was adjoining land. Here he carried on farming in a general way and has erected a commodious seven-room frame dwelling.
Mr. Matthews was married June 18, 1884. to Miss Cora Linton, who is a daughter of Benjamin and Delilah (Bucey) Linton, old residents of Wells Township. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews have reared the following children: Maurice; Mary, who is the wife of A. L. Clark, has two children, Raymond and Dehnas; and Alexander, Clara, Leona, Kenneth, Eva, William, Edward S., and Edith. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is politically a Republican and has served as trustee of the township.
