Gen. Gottfried Weitzel

Gen. GOTTFRIED WEITZEL, born at Winzlen in 1832, came to this country in early childhood, graduated high in his class at West Point, and was assigned to the engineer corps. While in command of a division in the operations against Petersburg, he greatly distinguished himself, the taking of which led to the fall of Richmond. “He was the first one who, at the head of his command, entered Richmond by the side of President Lincoln.
