Charles W. McCoy, Sr.


Charles W. McCoy, Sr., is a native of Lawrence, Ohio, born July 26, 1825. His father, John McCoy, died May 16, 1866, and his mother, Jane (Campbell) McCoy, died June 3, 1869. They came to this county in 1814. Charles W. McCoy was married in this county June 13, 1858, to Urania M. Wheeler, who is also a native of this county, born November 26, 1827. Her parents, Joseph and Urania M. (Wheeler) Wheeler, settled in this county in 1819. Their deaths occurred in May, 1861, and August, 1866, respectively. Mr. McCoy held the office of county commissioner from 1875 to 1878. He was a member of the legislature for one term. He has been a school director for twenty-five years. The following are Mr. McCoy’s children: Homer W., born April 29, 1859, resides at home; Nelson W., November 27, 1861, died September 3, 1878; Joseph W., May 20, 1863, resides at home; Charles W., junior, February 16, 1866, resides at home. Two of Mr. McCoy’s brothers were in the war of 1861. Samuel and John both enlisting in 1863 in the 173rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and serving to the close of the war. H. N. Wheeler, a brother of Mrs. McCoy, enlisted in 1861, as a private in the 17th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was in the battle of Pittsburg Landing, where he was wounded, and was sent to the hospital, where he remained three months, when he returned to his command, and on the recommendation of General Logan he was promoted to captain and acting adjutant-general on the staff of Logan. His commission dated June 7, 1864. He served to the close of the war. Mr. McCoy is engaged in farming in Perry township. His address is Sheridan Coal Works, Lawrence county, Ohio.
