George Stitzel

George Stitzel was born in Washington Township, Holmes Co., Ohio, in 1855. His grandfather, George Henry Stitzel, a native of Sulz, Germany, was born in 1790, and died February 20, 1878. He was married in his native country, and with his wife and seven children came to the United States, taking up forty acres of land in Washington Township, Holmes County, and afterward bought an additional eighty acres. Henry Stitzel, the oldest of this family, was twelve years of age when his parents came to this county, and here he spent his life, dying in 1878. He was a farmer, and at the time of his death owned 150 acres of land. He married Margaret Huff, who came to America from Germany at the age of sixteen years. They had a family of three sons and one daughter: George, Jacob J., Henry and Margaret, latter of whom died July 4, 1875, at the age of nine years, four months and twenty-eight days. The mother of these children married, the second time, Mr. John Melheim, and died July 3, 1885, at the age of sixty years, ten months and eight days, her home being then at Loudonville.

George Stitzel spent his early life on his father's farm, receiving the benefits to be derived from the common schools, and since reaching manhood has been engaged in farming. He now owns one-half of his father's estate, which is well improved and is one of the best farms in the township. He was married in 1878 to Magdalena, daughter of Peter and Magdalena (Weimer) Lambert, and they have two sons: Austin Wilbert and Albert Curtis. Politically Mr. Stitzel is a Democrat.
